Silence Violence
Silence Violence
Signed and numbered Limited Edition of 33.
Archival inkjet print on Somerset fine art paper with hand-torn edges.
Size: 60cm x 45cm.
This edition is from an original painting - size 160cm x 120cm - which has at it's centre an ambiguous form which could be seen as a firework, an explosion or a flower.
Partly inspired by a line in a Tom Waits song 'Swordfish Trombones': "He came home from the war with a party in his head - and an idea for a firework display" - the artwork is a visualisation of a self-penned poem.

Here are the words that create the image:
ITS NO JOKE
AND A BATTLEFIELDS NO PLACE TO POKE FUN
AT THINGS THAT COME AND GO
AND THE TIMES YOU’VE AWOKE TO GUNS
AND BODIES AND SMOKE
AND PINS AND NEEDLES
AND SCATTERED LEADERS
THE AIR SO CLOSE
YOUR CHEST IS HEAVING
YOUR EYES ARE BLEEDING
NO NOT EVEN
A REST IN EDEN
CAN KEEP OUT THE ROAR AND THE FOG
THE POINTING FINGERS
THE LINGERING EYES OF THE DOPED AND THE BLIND
AND YOU WON’T HEAR A PEEP FROM THE CROWN
WHO LAY THE LAW DOWN
THEN FLEE UNDERGROUND
LEAVING US TO THE FOLK
WHO ARE WIRED AND HUNGRY
ITS NO JOKE
THAT FOR EVERY TON THAT EXPLODES
A LINE IS WROTE
HERE LIES ANON
DREAM PAST THE SPIRES
AND YOU’LL SEE THE FLOWERS
AND THE CHERRY BLOSSOM
THAT HIDES THE DIRT
IN THE GROUNDS OF THE CHURCH
AND GOLD CHINTZ AND NETS
CONCEALS THE GRIN
OF THE GOONS AND THE BRATS
THAT DRINK THE GIN
AND GET LOOSE ON THE SWAG
THAT WAS GAINED ON THE BACKS
OF THE NINE TO FIVERS
THE LEFT BEHINDERS
THE OLD SURVIVORS
SWEET PINS OF VOICES
PIERCE YOUR SKIN
AND MAKE YOUR EYES STING
AND YOU BLINK AND YOU BLINK
AND YOU BLINK AGAIN
AS YOU SEE THROUGH THE SMOKE
ITS NO JOKE
THAT FOR EVERY TON THAT EXPLODES
A LINE IS WROTE
HERE LIES ANON
