‘Penthouse Condo’ is a painting from the ‘Startled Artist’ series of paintings. It's about seeing things we can't unsee. Every. Single. Day. Startled by graphic visual images, by insane behaviour, by harmful actions, by catastrophe as entertainment, by incredible beauty, by extraordinary art, by immense wealth with poor taste, by ravaging poverty with dignified humanity, by foolish pranks, by war… The machine-drum attack of wave after wave of paradoxical information that leads to a dazzled anxiety. That leads to insomnia. That leads to burnout.
The skull motif is a kind of self-portrait emoji, operating also as a gender neutral and racially neutral Pop emblem that represents a universal mind floating through the world, while the world floats through the mind. It’s a device used to reflect personal observations whilst simultaneously acknowledging our shared experience. The geometric shapes in the painting are based on the strange and quite beautiful geodesic patterns seen sometimes halfway between waking and sleeping, usually around 4am. The medical term is ‘Hypnogogia’. A glimpse of beauty in the world of the insomniac.
The paintings are finished to museum standard, using a conservation grade removable UV varnish system. This robustly protects the picture surface from dust and dirt, and also provides a layer of protection from UV light.
